Resident Rights

At a recent Fireside Chat Broadmead's Director of Social Work presented residents with a list of "resident rights to which all residents are entitled, both in independent living and in license care". This list is reproduced here.

1. Make no distinction in the service we provide on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, color, marital status, veteran status, medical condition sexual orientation or other proved class status, insurance or financial status;

2. Treat all residents in a manner that preserves their dignity, autonomy, self esteem and civil rights;

3. Protect every resident from physical, emotional, verbal or sexual abuse, neglect or exploitation;

4. Protect all aspect of resident privacy and confidentiality;

5. Respect client's personal property and money and protect it from loss theft, improper use and damage;

6. Respect the right of residents and their legal representatives to be informed of and participate in decision about their care and treatment;

7. Respect the right of residents and/or their legal representatives to access their medical records as required by the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

8. Recognize that residents have the right to consent or refuse care and the right to be informed of the medical consequences of such refusal;

9. Protect residents' rights to be free from physical and chemical restraints; and

10. Respect the residents's right to self-determination and autonomy.
