- How does the BRA enhance the life of residents at Broadmead?
In brief Broadmead, itself, provides the necessities of life for the community of residents, including shelter, meals, health care, wellness, security and many other essential services. Most of the social, cultural and recreational activities for the residents are provided by the residents themselves. These activities are funded and manage by the BRA.
- Now what do we actually do?
We maintain a “buddy system”. The broadmead apartments are organized in groups called clusters. Each cluster houses 10 to 20 residents. The buddy system is an informal voluntary pairing of residents within a cluster. The purpose of this pairing is to make sure your “buddy” is in good health each morning and needs no help. Each “buddy” pair decides how they will contract or signal each other daily that all is well. The result of this program is a sense of security and knowledge that both you and your “buddy” are ready for the joys of the day.
We maintain the Broadmead Emergency Telephone System (BETS). BETS is setup for the purpose of rapidly relaying emergency messages to all residents. The administration decides when such a message is needed. Then the resident BETS chair is notified, each cluster representative is contacted and the message is delivered to each resident through a telephone-tree calling system.
We organized tours and provide transportation to residents to cultural events throughout the Baltimore - Washington, DC area. Broadmead provides the buses and drivers. The BRA then will reimburse Broadmead for the cost of each bus trip. Recent tours have been to the White House, Phillips Gallery, National Gallery of Art, National Portrait Gallery, Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Gettysburg battlefield. Transportation is routinely provided to the Baltimore Symphony, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Center Stage, Lyric Opera, Everyman Theater and the Shriver Hall Concert Series at the Johns Hopkins University.
We maintain a monthly newsletter called The Voice of the Residents.
We maintain an office with a copier machine. The BRA office contains a large number of VCR tapes and DVD movies and operas which residents can borrow. We also own and maintain a copier machine in the our office.
The BRA has an archivist whose job is to store relevant records such as agendas, minutes, annual & financial reports, copies of BRA & CCRC newsletters, bios of current and former residents and other items of interest.
The BRA maintains a “Broadmead welcomes” program. A team of current residents will interview all new residents, take their picture and will write a story about them which appears in the Voice of the Residents.
We maintain an Open Forum where prominent speakers come to Broadmead, make a presentation and interact with our residents. Recent speakers have been Sanford J. Ungar, President of Goucher College; Dr. Stan Becker, Professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health; Jay Hancock, financial columnist at the Baltimore Sun; Wendy Sherman, ambassador and advisor to President Clinton and Madeleine Albright; Taylor Branch, recipient of the Pulitzer Prize in history; Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr., Governor of Maryland; Steven Sharfstein, MD, President & CEO of the Sheppard Pratt Health Care System; Barbara Mikulski, United States Senator from state of Maryland.
